2 Uncle 2 Paul

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before on this blog, but one of my favorite pastimes is being an uncle. As I already have the world's most adorable nephew, it was only fair that eventually my sister (and most likely my brother-in-law as well) got around to producing an inevitably equally adorable niece. After 9 months of getting fatter and fatter, my sister finally came through.

On April 17th, 2009 in beautiful Torrance, CA, Veronica Giovanna Barbarie was born.

Fig. 3: Grandfather (aka "Grumpsy") and child. From what I hear, Veronica has not opened her eyes up a whole lot. Given what she had to look at, she's obviously wise beyond her age.

Random picture update

Just said adios to the Parents, who were in town for nearly three weeks, so I hope I am forgiven for the total lack of updates of late. I will attempt to rectify the situation, post haste. As mentioned earlier, I have had a string of visitors and a series of minor adventures in the last few weeks (even before my parents arrived) and I have thus accumulated a small pile of mildly amusing photos which I thought suitable for publication online. Inner City Pressure

Well, it only took two and a half months, but I have finally moved into a quasi-permanent apartment. With a little help from Serge and his car, and a few fully-encumbered hikes across town, I have cast off my tiny, ugly, smelly studio for a much larger, less ugly, and significantly better smelling apartment on the other side of Lausanne. Last night was my first night in the new apartment, so I am still getting to know the place, but I figured I ought to post something before people start boycotting my blog in protest. First, the good: The apartment nice, clean, and spacious. The bathroom is clean, has a full shower, and nice fixtures. The kitchen has a full-sized oven, four-burner stove, and plenty of cabinets. The bedroom is large, has it's own radiator, and has a wooden floor. The building looks really high-class on the inside and looks well-maintained. I have a cellar the size of a basketball court. The continuing adventures of the world's stupidest man

What with the end of the decent weather fast approaching, I have been doing my best to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty of Switzerland (at least when I'm not doing laundry). As the forecast for Sunday didn't look too bad, Jens (my officemate) and I decided to embark on an impromptu hike. Armed with only my (up-to-this-point) trustworthy "Walking in Switzerland" guidebook, we met at the train station Sunday morning and chose a hiking destination on the spot. As neither of us were feeling like a huge adventure, we decided on a hike in the nearby Jura mountains. A quick glance through the guide found us a 5-6 hour hike that featured both a gorge and a long crest with "splendid vistas of the main Alpine massifs." At this point, it was only 9:45 and according to the book, the last bus from the end-town left at 7 PM, so we figured that we were in good shape.
